Subject: I’m no expert, but…

I’ve never brought dinner to a woman I wasn’t interested in beyond just sex—something to think about.

“Are you going to come eat? Or do I need to bring the food to you?” My eyes snap from my computer screen to the spot where Miller’s standing, a heaping bowl of Butter Chicken held carefully in front of him.

Why isn’t this more awkward? It should be uncomfortable, standing in a room with a man who made me come so hard I saw actual stars. The things he said to me, the things he did. I shouldn’t be able to eat Indian food with him like two buddies just catching up after a long day at work.

It doesn’t feel awkward, though. It feels right. It feels normal. It feels like…us.

“Sorry, I’m just distracted.”

“I can tell,” his brows pinch together over concerned eyes. “You want to talk about it?”

Yes. No. I don’t know!

“It’s just work stuff. I’ll be fine,” I stand, brushing both hands down the front of my dress. He doesn’t seem to believe me, opening his mouth to continue the conversation, but I change the subject to something decidedly less heavy. “Is that Matter Paneer?”

“And Malai Kofta,” he points to another dish near the back of the makeshift table. There have to be at least six full entrees here, and my stomach growls hungrily at the sight of them. “I knew you hadn’t eaten today.”

He sounds far too smug, chuckling under his breath when I go straight for the Chicken Vindaloo. A comfortable silence settles around us as I finish loading my bowl with as much food as possible. This is more than enough to fill me to bursting, and I didn’t even make it through all the choices.

I’m coming back for some of that Butter Chicken. “No matter how full I am.”

“Are you talking to the food?”

“What? No.” Yes, but I didn’t think it was loud enough for you to hear.

“You were,” his smile is blinding as I make my way back to the desk, and I do my best to ignore it.

“Just eat your food, Mills.”

“Oh, speaking of eating food,” he leans forward in his chair, gently sliding his half-empty bowl onto the edge of my desk. “My mom asked if you were still coming to Thanksgiving.”

“Of course, I am.”

“As my girlfriend?” The question is quick, almost like he had to force himself to ask it in a rush, or he wouldn’t have asked it at all.

Is that what this is about? Has Miller felt the same nervousness I have the last two days? Or have my nerves been coming through more than I realized, making him think there is something to be nervous about? “What kind of fake girlfriend would I be if I left you hanging at the last minute.”

I try for levity, and it seems to work. Miller’s shoulders relax from where they’ve crept up near his ears. “Awesome. I thought we could drive over together to help sell the whole ‘Happy Couple Act’.
